1mile² Dhaka is hosted by Britto Arts Trust, who are working with local artist Mahbubur Rahman, UK photographer Syra Miah, and Rizwana of environmental organisation BELA. The project takes place in the city of Old Dhaka on the banks of the Buriganga River and at the Ahshan Manjil Museum as well as in Jalchhatra, Modhupur, the indigenous forest home of the Garo – one of Bangladesh’s most prominent tribal peoples.
Syra Miah is the UK artist for 1mile² Dhaka. Her photographic work has evolved from an interest in the way people live their lives in an ever-changing world. Although representing mundane and often overlooked domestic environments she aims to make images that evoke illusory, extraordinary people and landscapes. In Dhaka, she will collaborate with host organisation Britto Arts Trust, local artist Mahbubur Rahman and ecologists BELA to map the city of Old Dhaka.
Mahbubur Rahman is a Bangladeshi performance artist and painter, and a founding member of Britto Arts Trust, Bangladesh, which holds workshops to enable students and artists to explore local issues, interests and influences. His work often responds to current or historical events, and is often sensational, flamboyant, or playful.
