Mai Kolachi and the environment around the Mai Kolachi Expressway are the locale for 1mile² Karachi, which will see five local artists mapping the biodiversity, cultural and aesthetic transformation of the area. Mai Kolachi links Clifton with Queens Road and is located along the southern coast of the city. The building of the Expressway, which has been built on land reclaimed from a lagoon, has led to the destruction of most of the mangrove forest and disturbed the eco-system of this coastal stretch.
In December the artists will undertake study visits to the Indus Delta Mangrove area, and meet with environmental organisations. Shehri will share their research and maps on the encroachment in the Mai Kolachi area with the artists; IUCN will organize a tour of the Mangrove Forest in the Indus Delta to familiarize the artists with the physical environment of this coastal vegetation; and Shirkat Gah and Urban Resource Center will arrange the screening of films and talks on the impact of environmental degradation on the inhabitants of the area. These meetings will inform the workshops with art students.
